Not a lot of people make it to the coast or beaches of Myanmar, and if they do, they tended to go to Ngapali. Ngapali beach is built up as a resort beach town. It’s comfortable and you can find most of the convenient amenities here. It’s luxurious, which mean you’ll be paying top dollar for it.
But I was willing to venture a little further away from the tourist action and decided to head to Kanthaya. A town of one street (with only several buildings), Kanthaya is isolated and natural.
At the time of my travel, only one guesthouse (still under construction) and one restaurant was available. There’s no plumbing and electricity is only available for a couple hours in the evenings, sometimes. But aside from a couple locals here and there, the whole town and beach is yours!
If Kanthaya sounds too raw and remote, further south from it is Gwa. More of a town, Gwa offers more choices for guesthouses and restaurants, but not by much.
Rent a motorbike and take it on the 2 minute ferry ride across the river. On the other side, there’s a lovely stretch of remote beach.
